Call to the Amazighs of the diasporas from all countries: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Canary Islands, Libya, Mali, Morocco, Mauritania, Niger, Sudan, Chad and Tunisia.

20 April 1980, the anniversary date of the Berber/Amazigh Spring, is a major historical landmark for the Amazigh peoples of North Africa, the Sahel and the Canary archipelago, constituting the land of Tamazgha.

In an irreversible movement of History, this emblematic date expresses the Amazighs’ aspiration to assert and reclaim their identity, as well as to obtain recognition for their languages, which are often threatened or even endangered.

Today, despite some hard-won gains, the Amazigh peoples remain discriminated against and their most basic human rights are trampled: the right to life and security, political rights, cultural and linguistic rights, socio-economic rights, as well as their rights to an environment free from ecological peril.

The peoples of North Africa and the Sahel face conflict situations that threaten peace across the region. Armed conflicts in the Sahel, the menacing tensions between Algeria and Morocco, the persistent instability in Libya, state authoritarianism and the interests at stake of great powers make up the troubled and worrying current affairs of this northern Africa.

In commemoration of the dual struggle of the Berber/Amazigh Spring for identity recognition and for democratic freedoms, we, the signatories of this text, call for a march for:

• The effective recognition of Amazigh identity, cultures and languages by adopting genuinely proactive policies by the states of North Africa and the Sahel, as well as the promotion of the linguistic rights of the many Amazigh speakers in countries of immigration.

• The inscription by UNESCO of the Amazigh alphabet, Tifinagh, on the World Heritage list.

• The establishment of democratic political systems in line with the sociocultural and economic realities of the peoples of this geographic area.

• Respect for human rights and, in particular, the fight against all forms of racism and discrimination.

• An end to repression against any form of expression and the release of all prisoners of conscience.

• The prosecution of the unpunished crimes committed against the Amazighs such as those of the Black Spring of Kabylie in 2001, the events of Tkout in the Aurès in 2004, Sidi Ifni in the Souss in southern Morocco in 2008, Mzab in 2014, the Rif popular movements of 1958-59 and 2016, as well as the prosecution of the numerous acts of violence committed against Tuareg communities in Mali/Azawad and Niger since independence.

• Respect for the rights of the Amazighs to their ancestral lands, with an end to land dispossession and the protection of their environment.

• Ensure the socio-economic development of local populations with an equitable distribution of the exploited wealth.

• The imperative pursuit of peace and living together in the countries of Tamazgha by promoting dialogue for conflict resolution through all peaceful means.

• Initiate a dynamic to conceive Tamazgha as a whole with a view to the emergence of a regional bloc that counts in the world.
