Uniting Hearts for Tigrayan Children.
Tigray, a region located in northern Ethiopia, bordering Eritrea, has faced a profoundly devastating period due to the genocidal war waged by the Federal Government with its allied Eritrean and Amhara Forces since November 2020. The active war was stopped by a peace agreement signed in Pretoria, South Africa on November 2, 2022. Although open conflict has now ceased, a large part of Tigray remains occupied by Eritrean and Amhara forces.
The armed conflict and subsequent occupation by hostile forces have had dramatic consequences for the Tigrayans. It is estimated that between 385,000 and 600,000 civilians have been killed. Additionally, every day witnesses the ongoing tragedy of famine, claiming more victims. More than 2 million people have been displaced, and 20,000 people are reported missing.
Many infrastructures were completely destroyed, with 90% of schools damaged, including the destruction of buildings, blackboards, electrical and water supply systems, and a shortage of educational materials such as screens, textbooks, notebooks etc. Schools have been shut down since the beginning of the Covid pandemic. While some initiatives are now starting to open schools, a significant challenge remains as 60% of children are still out of school due to the unfolding famine and other reasons. Given that children are the most vulnerable victims of this violence, we believe that prioritizing efforts to reintegrate them into schools must be a primary focus. This will not only aid in their recovery but also contribute to the overall rebuilding of Tigray.
This platform was opened in response to the urgent appeal from the Interim Office of Education of Tigray, seeking immediate intervention to address the ongoing famine and the critical need to re-school students. Our priority is to support school programs, intending to save lives and allow these students to continue their education. The money collected will then be directed to a specific school (Walwa Elementary School, Abergele District, Central Tigray), through the Tigray Interim of Education Bureau and the Tigray-based Book Mountain Foundation.
Together, We Can Make a Difference: Your support can make a significant impact on the lives of students in Tigray. Join us in fostering hope, resilience, and a brighter future through education.
