In Goma, children displaced by the war need you to be able to go to school!

On Sunday 31 May 2026, 31 runners/walkers will take part in the 20km of Brussels with AFEDE Asbl to call on your generosity to provide schooling for 50 displaced children in the city of Goma (North Kivu). As every year since our first participation in 2013, we form a team and gather runners/walkers who want to live a sporting, festive & supportive moment, while giving a better future to a child from the Kivu.

In 2025, the AFEDE team at the 20km of Brussels raised 8.020,48 euros thanks to you, and this money allowed us to pay the last term of the 2024-2025 school year & the fees of 4 finalists for the State Exams, provide all the back-to-school kits for 2025-2026 (uniforms, shoes, schoolbags, supplies & books) as well as registration fees, then 1/3 of the school fees for term 1, and also healthcare for children and mothers affected by epidemics (Mpox, cholera, measles, typhoid + several cases of malnutrition). Six families without decent shelter were also rehoused.


2025 was a year of survival for all the inhabitants of the city of Goma – the capital of North Kivu province – since 27 January 2025, when the city fell under the control of the M23 rebels with the support of the Rwandan army, after violent clashes. In the days and weeks that followed, all socio-economic activities were paralysed or drastically slowed, banks were closed; and thousands of families were forcibly displaced or confined to their homes due to insecurity. Children of school and university age were among the first affected, as it became difficult for them to continue their studies in peace, although the new de facto authorities allowed the resumption of school and university activities from Monday 19 February 2025, the city still faces trauma from massive loss of life and uncertainty about the future. The constant fear of being “taken” during neighborhood lockdowns or attacks makes learning difficult because parents sometimes hesitate to send their children to school, fearing they may never return. And then... most families find themselves in great precariousness.


It is in this context that concrete actions like TEMBEYA, which means LET’S MOVE FORWARD in Swahili, help preserve the flame of learning and above all bring a sense of normality in an environment full of challenges.

TEMBEYA is the schooling programme set up in Goma by AFEDE Asbl, to educate children made vulnerable by displacement due to war and repeated conflicts. The first school intake took place in September 2015, and without respite, this will be the 12th school intake in September 2026.



With your support, we can accompany these vulnerable families by schooling their children.

These children are for the most part formerly and newly displaced, born of rapes used as a weapon of war, former child soldiers, from the indigenous Pygmy people, etc. With TEMBEYA, we address the consequences of these violations of the integrity of many families in this otherwise magnificent region.
