Sending 2 container ships from Madagascar to Mayotte to respond to a vital emergency: access to drinking water and food
Mayotte is facing an unprecedented crisis situation after the passage of Cyclone Chido. The poorest population in France, the inhabitants find themselves in total distress: little or no access to water, little or no access to electricity, a lack of essential basic supplies for their survival, gas, gasoline but also equipment for clearing and repairing (chainsaws, tarpaulins…).
Aid at the moment is insufficient. Deliveries from NGOs have not yet arrived and will take time to come because they come from far away. Since Sunday 15/12/2024, famine has been increasingly present and health risks have multiplied.
It is in this context of absolute urgency that we are launching this fundraiser to collect funds in order to immediately respond to the vital needs of the population of Mayotte. This is only a drop in the bucket compared to the overall needs, but this initiative will make it possible to deliver drinking water and food very quickly.
How do we proceed? It's very simple:
1. Each donation will contribute to purchasing basic necessities listed in order of priority (at low cost in Madagascar) with partners on site (drinking water, rice, construction materials, etc.);
2. A team is mobilized to fill two boats from Madagascar, which represents a total of 560 tonnes of essential products!
3. These two boats will leave Majunga in the coming days for Mayotte;
4. Once arrived in Mayotte, these goods will be distributed to the population under the coordination of the authorities and local organizations present on site, responsible for managing the distributions.
5. We are liaising with state services so that these barges (and others, we hope) are requisitioned so that full boats arrive in Mayotte every day and so that what needs to be evacuated can be evacuated. Boats from mainland France take 6 weeks to arrive in Mayotte. Those from Majunga in Madagascar take 1 day to complete the crossing.
We are in contact with several local, regional and state authorities and organizations so that all the lights are green; what remains is to make the chain of solidarity work!
