On December 24, Christmas Eve, I decided to wander the streets looking for a homeless person to whom I could give a Christmas by spending an entire day with them. At first I was very apprehensive; I didn't know if I would find the right person or if it would go well. After hours of searching I came across Laurent, who likes to be called "Laurent the Conqueror".
When I met him I immediately knew he was the one I had been looking for all day. Laurent is an endearing person with a big heart to whom life hasn't been kind. He is a great chess enthusiast, and it is through this passion that he raises money for himself and for other people in need. He walks around with several chess sets that he lays out in a row, and anyone who wants can come and play for free, and leave a coin if they wish.
Laurent discovered his passion for chess after a tragic car accident that changed his life forever. He was in the car with his parents when a truck hit them; he was only 11 years old at the time and was the only one to come out alive from that accident. In the hospital there was a chess set next to his bed; he taught himself to play and hasn't let it go since.
During the day we shared with Laurent, my older brother and a friend of mine and I did a variety of things, such as bowling, virtual reality, pool, having a drink together, etc., and we finished by taking him to a hotel so he could stay there for 3 nights to keep warm. Laurent not only taught us a lot, but also gave us the best Christmas Eve of our lives. Laurent is a life lesson in himself; he became my friend and I wish for a better future for my mate.
You can find the whole adventure in pictures on my YouTube channel:
A few days after the Christmas Eve we spent together I went back to see Laurent to check on him; I asked him various questions about his reintegration into society to see what I could do to help (without him knowing I was organizing a fundraiser for him). Laurent then confided in me that an acquaintance had told him about a caravan on a plot of land that could be given to him, the only problem being that Laurent has to rent the land — you can imagine he can't afford it. That's where you, me, and anyone who wishes can step in.
All donations are welcome, whether €1, €5 or €10; Laurent will be very grateful and you will be contributing to a better tomorrow for him. If you cannot contribute financially, please do not hesitate to share the fundraiser around you!
A huge thank you to those who took the trouble to read this far, to have made a donation or to have shared! Thank you so much, really!
