We are 35 strikers at the SIAP site in Bassens, a strike followed 100% in the incineration service. SIAP is a waste management plant, and we handle in particular hazardous waste coming from SEVESO factories and recycling centers: aerosols, solvents, acids, hospital waste called DASRI (Waste from Healthcare Activities with Infectious Risks). All this waste is incinerated in large furnaces, and we are thus constantly exposed to high risks in the plant. In addition, since the start of the pandemic we have been on the front line of the health crisis with an increase in hospital waste that we process; we even receive COVID waste from Spain.
Despite the importance of our sector for keeping society running, the management of the SIAP Prociner – Sarpi subsidiaries of the Veolia group does not want to recognize what is due to us and instead offers only contempt: our wages, our employment statuses, our working conditions are not commensurate with our efforts as essential workers. Yet Veolia could well meet our salary demands when you know that its turnover was €2.6 billion in 2019. But if we went on strike on June 18, it is to win our demands, at a time when management refuses to listen.
We appeal to your solidarity because we have gone on the offensive to defend our right to be recognized for the responsibilities and work we perform. We demand that management grant equal pay coefficients and equal salaries for equal work and skill. We are organizing to defend our employment statuses and to protect these gains for all workers on the SIAP site because many of our colleagues are temporary workers, do not have permanent positions, and do not have our salary scales and statuses: we fight against precariousness and for the preservation of jobs, we demand better working conditions for everyone and for future generations.
We are determined to continue the strike, all united around the same struggle. But SIAP management is trying by all means to break our strike, even by the most shameful methods: it first obstructed our most basic right to strike by replacing our work positions with untrained managers and temporary workers, and to requisition us it directly sent the police to our homes, callously confronting our families with repressive forces simply because we defend our rights! We denounce management’s scandalous methods to break the strike!
To face management and create a balance of power by continuing the strike, we need your help! We are opening this fund to allow our low wages to assert our right to strike; it will be managed by the strikers themselves, according to needs and without distinction between unionized or not. We also invite you to come meet us and support us directly on our picket, every day in front of the incineration site, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
