Hello,
On June 3, 2021, our son, our brother, our friend Yanis, a 20-year-old resident of Saint-Denis, died of his injuries after having been dangerously chased by a BAC vehicle several weeks earlier without any valid reason.
On April 14, 2021, he was returning home accompanied by a friend, each on a scooter. At the end of his street, a BAC vehicle drove straight towards them. Panic. Fear. After years of violence and humiliation by police in our working-class, precarious and racialized neighborhoods, they fled. The BAC decided to pursue them. Several witnesses attest to the dangerousness of the police vehicle during this chase. Everything is unclear. An investigation took place but no judicial inquiry has been opened. 49 days after the accident, having spent that time in a deep coma, Yanis died from his multiple injuries caused by the impact.
A circular, sent to all police stations and regularly updated since 2005, nevertheless prohibits the pursuit of two-wheelers except in cases of serious violent crime. Since Laramy and Moushin in 2007, about ten racialized young men like Yanis have lost their lives after their motorcycle, scooter or quad were dangerously pursued and/or violently struck by the police without any real reason.
We want justice with a serious investigation to clarify the circumstances of the accident in the context of an unlawful pursuit of a two-wheeled vehicle, illegal because there was no apparent reason. Since June 2021, the case has still not been brought to a judicial inquiry...
On Saturday November 7, 2021 and on Saturday November 5, 2022, the association Justice et Vérité pour Yanis organized marches of commemoration and action for Yanis in Saint-Denis (93), to pay tribute to him and to fight together against all forms of police, prison and state violence, and against all injustices faced by victims' families, but also to demand once again the footage from the surveillance cameras that line the route taken by Yanis and the BAC vehicle.
We know that our fight will be long to obtain justice. Without the opening of a judicial inquiry, we will know nothing about the investigation that was carried out... we will continue to mobilize so that justice hears us and does its job, to have access to our file, to end the impunity for police crimes. We will make justice for Yanis, so that he did not die for nothing!
To cover the costs we have had to face since Yanis's death, you can help the association Justice et Vérité pour Yanis, individually or on behalf of your organization, by making a donation.
The money raised will be used to:
- finance legal proceedings
- finance independent expert assessments on the circumstances of Yanis's accident
- organize mobilizations to keep our fight alive and obtain justice (marches, sports tournaments, meals, conferences, screenings)
- print leaflets
- produce stickers and badges
