Fatiha, 11 years old, originally from and residing in Maghnia, Algeria, urgently needs a bone marrow transplant in a specialized facility due to beta thalassemia.
Fatiha is very affected both physically and emotionally. Fatiha is apathetic most of the time, unable to find the energy necessary to undertake any activity.
Fatiha has been taken out of school and isolates herself in her despair. Her greatest wish is to recover in order to resume the normal course of life. Fatiha would like to play with friends.
Beta-thalassemia (BT) major is a severe and early form of BT characterized by anemia requiring regular red blood cell transfusions.
Fatiha receives repeated blood transfusions and iron chelation. She spends her life moving between her home and healthcare facilities.
Due to her condition, Fatiha suffers from a form of depression. Fatiha is very distressed by her daily life, which requires many painful treatments.
The disease began in early childhood with severe anemia. Malnutrition, diarrhea, irritability, and recurrent fever attacks mark Fatiha's life.
Fatiha shows growth retardation, pallor, jaundice, and low muscle mass.
Complications related to iron overload can occur.
In the long term, iron overload can lead to cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias, liver cirrhosis, diabetes, and failure of the parathyroids, thyroid, pituitary and, less commonly, the adrenals.
Other complications include hypersplenism, venous thrombosis, and osteoporosis.
Fatiha is very often tired.
Without regular transfusions and chelation therapy, life expectancy is reduced. Cardiac complications remain the main cause of death.
Her family does not have the funds and resources needed to finance the curative treatment, which consists only of a bone marrow transplant.
This is why we are asking for your support to finance a bone marrow transplant for Fatiha.
If we raise the funds, Fatiha will be cared for by the Medical Park group located in Istanbul.
We have financed many successful procedures at this facility and we thank all the people who have enabled us to treat our children.
