We learned this morning that Djinan passed away after a long battle she fought alongside her parents against the illness. Djinan had arrived in Turkey to receive a liver transplant and doctors discovered, in addition to her existing condition, kidney failure caused by her illness. The operation was risky but had succeeded. She developed a pulmonary infection that spread and her heart was exhausted.
She left us this morning. We are deeply saddened because we believed so strongly despite the damage the disease had done to little Djinan.
Our thoughts go to Djinan’s uncle who had been saving every month to help his sister, and to Djinan’s grandmother who is currently in France and deeply affected by the situation.
Thank you for allowing Djinan not to die under her parents’ roof and for enabling her to finally receive a liver transplant. It is a battle that the family and the association have won so that Djinan could be treated and depart with dignity.

Djinan, a little princess of 5 years old, lives in Constantine, Algeria. This only child suffers from neonatal-onset cholestatic liver disease. Her condition is already considered critical. Without an imminent liver transplant, the little girl risks death.

The liver is the only organ in our body able to regenerate on its own. Indeed, in humans, up to three quarters of the liver can be removed and it will return to its original size within 4 months. This makes donating a portion of a liver from a donor to a recipient feasible, because each half of the liver will then regenerate into a complete liver.

Children with liver failure suffer and face a multitude of complications (cardiovascular, infectious, hemorrhagic, ...). The liver is a complex chemical factory that works 24 hours a day. It processes almost everything you eat, drink, or let into your skin. And those are just a few of the 500 different functions essential to life.

The surgery is very complex and requires pre- and post-transplant follow-up for both the donor and the child. This transplant is not performed in Algeria.

We will therefore refer the little girl to a competent healthcare facility so that she can benefit from a living-donor liver transplant.

The mother is the donor. The hospitals insist and will only take charge of the child once the funds have been deposited into the facility's account.

We have contacted a university establishment located in Izmir, Turkey.

The costs are lower than in Belgium, which has risen from €120,000 to €160,000. The child will be hospitalized for 3 weeks after the transplant and will then have to stay 3 months in Turkey for post-transplant check-ups included in the estimate. Only accommodation and food will not be covered.

Djinan has safely arrived in Izmir.
