Sofia’s parents are asking the community for help and are launching an appeal for assistance to treat their 3‑year‑old daughter. Sofia requires a liver transplant from a living donor, the donor being her mother. As you know, this intervention is not performed in Algeria and therefore must be carried out in a specialized facility.

For state coverage or CNAS, the list of requirements is long and does not guarantee coverage within the timeframe that would prevent Sofia’s condition from worsening. Biliary atresia (AVB) is a fatal disease. The only option: a liver transplant.

The mother is the donor. The liver is the only organ in our body capable of regenerating on its own. Indeed, in humans, up to 3/4 of the liver can be removed and it will regain its original size within 4 months. This makes donation of part of a liver from a donor to a recipient possible, because each half of the liver will then regenerate into a complete liver.

As with all the children previously cared for at Saint Luc Hospital Brussels by our association and thanks to your donations, the intervention is very complex and requires pre‑ and post‑transplant follow‑up for both the donor and the child. This transplant is not performed in Algeria.

Procedures are underway and the final estimate will be posted online. The hospital requires a battery of very costly tests for this family living in very modest conditions.

In the presence of biliary atresia, the duct leading from the liver to the intestine deteriorates, which prevents the liver from draining bile. A buildup of bile can then form in the liver and damage it.

If bile flow cannot be established, liver function is gradually lost, and children with the disease rarely survive beyond the age of two unless a Kasai procedure called a porto‑enterostomy has been successfully performed (1 child out of 3). Sofia’s AVB was diagnosed very early.

The procedure cannot reverse damage already sustained by the liver. Despite a successful Kasai procedure, liver cirrhosis continues to progress slowly (the scar on her abdomen testifies to this intervention).

Sofia has hepatomegaly, or a noticeable enlargement of the liver. She has no other option than a liver transplant to survive.
