A young mother, 23 years old, whose partner left her and who is facing extreme hardship, originally from Fes in Morocco, contacted us in tears to inform us about her daughter Amal Benourhazi, aged 6 months, who was born with this terrible congenital malformation: biliary atresia, which inevitably leads to the child’s death if not treated.

There is no cure; only a “Kasai” procedure, intended to create a bypass so that bile can flow and not stagnate in the liver, is performed, but it only succeeds rarely. The Kasai procedure failed, not due to lack of surgeons’ skill, but because the success of this procedure varies from child to child.

The only option therefore: a liver transplant
The Kasai procedure was performed at the Hassan II Hospital Center in Fes when the baby was 2 months old.
What is this liver disease?
The liver produces bile. The gallbladder stores it. After a meal, when food reaches the duodenum (the first segment of the intestine), the gallbladder releases bile through the bile duct and then the common bile duct. Bile contains bile salts whose role is to dissolve fats.

When the bile ducts are narrowed, bile has difficulty flowing. Fats are poorly dissolved and digestion becomes heavier.
If the narrowing is significant, bile hardly passes. This is bile retention. Bile salts back up into the liver, then into the blood and finally into the urine where they are eliminated.
Very quickly, the effects on surrounding organs are felt: inflammation of the gallbladder, pancreatitis, and painful spasms causing hepatic colic.

If this scenario persists too long, the bile ducts become infected (cholangitis) and the liver, subjected to constant reflux, becomes exhausted and cirrhosis develops, thereby destroying the liver. This results in fatal biliary cirrhosis.

Other complications are present: cardiopulmonary complications, glycemic problems (the liver stores glucose as glycogen), etc. The list is long — the liver is like a factory...

Amal must undergo a living-donor liver transplant to avoid certain death.
This is why we are appealing to your charity to raise the necessary funds. The procedure is not performed in Morocco and the state does not cover care abroad. These families are left completely destitute, not to mention the very costly tests, assessments, ultrasounds and passports required to open a file, which leaves families with an even heavier feeling of helplessness.

We have contacted Saint-Luc, a university establishment located in Belgium where we have already performed transplants for 2 children.
Here is the estimate.

The child is only taken in charge when the amount is paid and available to the establishment. The child will join the pediatric transplant unit under Professor Reding if the necessary sum is raised.
