THE LIBRARY OF ECOLOGY:
A TREASURE TO PRESERVE AND PASS ON
At a time when consideration of Ecology has become a necessity, it is all the more important to know what we are talking about!... With the Library of Ecology, containing more than 35,000 catalogued works from all over the world, the public—professional or amateur—will surely find what they are looking for.
While awaiting its opening to all, the Library of Ecology is seeking a place to host its collection. Several local authorities have been approached. Currently it is financing and must continue to finance its storage in a secure location. It urgently needs financial help to achieve this.
For more than 50 years, Roland de Miller, writer-researcher, documentalist-librarian and itinerant bookseller at fairs and trade shows, has passionately gathered works from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries relating to Ecology, Nature and human–nature relationships in all their dimensions (scientific, cultural, historical, geographical, sociological, philosophical, economic, political, health-related, spiritual, literary, artistic…), without partisan bias.
THE LIBRARY OF ECOLOGY IS THE WORK OF A LIFETIME:
– A UNIQUE RESOURCE IN FRANCE FOR LEARNING ABOUT BIODIVERSITY
– A CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL HERITAGE OF COLLECTIVE INTEREST
– A TOOL IN THE SERVICE OF HUMANS AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
– A TOOL FOR EDUCATION, TRANSMISSION AND ANTICIPATION
– A LIVING PLACE OF MEMORY FOR ECOLOGY AND ALTERNATIVES
This encyclopedic, interdisciplinary documentary collection is complemented by 1,000 collections of French and foreign journals, a considerable volume of documentation and archives, and an exceptional collection of around 700 posters.
It is likely the richest collection in France on aromatic and medicinal plants, the history of environmentalism and nature conservation, and the relationships between Art and Nature… Through original books of great beauty, the majority of the major naturalists are represented. As stated in the Committee of Experts' report in 2003, the originality of this library “constitutes a unique heritage of its kind for the history and evolution of ecology and environmentalism, which gives it a vocation of public utility.”
The Library continues to grow constantly and must be safeguarded for present and future generations. For seven years it was accessible to the public in a municipal building of the City of Gap (Hautes-Alpes). Since then it has been stored in a closed warehouse (200 m2) while funds are sought to wait until its definitive installation in a space open to the public.
This fundraiser will help pay for storage covering at least 2,000 boxes on 110 full pallets. Without these necessary funds, the heritage represented by the Library of Ecology risks being lost forever…
