We have been taking action since 19 January against Macron’s counter-reform that seeks to raise the retirement age.
We, workers in the book trades, have come together and organized in a historic way to push back.
There is no question of letting Macron’s camp bring the legal retirement age closer to the average age of death.
There is no question of having to pay for supplementary pensions that we would not be able to afford anyway.
On what grounds should we give our years of life to bosses and to capital?
We, workers in the world of books, are not exempt from these realities and we will mobilize until the withdrawal of this counter-reform, a cornerstone of the Macronist project.
The mobilization in our sector reflects this social movement: it is unprecedented. We are part of private, precarious sectors whose working conditions are physically and mentally demanding, where wages are at rock bottom, and where deep anger is rising. In this context, no worker projects themselves to 64 and no one can resign themselves to giving two years of their life to capital.
From general assemblies to demonstrations, from discussions to leafleting in bookshops, the workers in our sector have continued to organize up to forming a “book bloc” within the marches.
We intend to continue this historic momentum and to keep mobilizing and supporting other sectors to wage a rolling strike until victory.
In order to be able to continue mobilizing and so that other employees can join the movement, we have decided to launch a strike fund. Entry-level wages are very low in our sector and many people remain at the SMIC level, or far below, notably apprentices in bookshops.
Like all mobilized workers, the first four days have weakened our financial resources; nevertheless we are determined to step up and take our share in a rolling strike starting Tuesday, March 7.
We therefore call on your solidarity to support the strikers and to enable those who are still hesitating to join the movement to commit against the pension reform, Macron and his world!
The fund will benefit workers within the limits of available funds.
