For several months, a new place to live has been opened in the La Guillotière neighborhood of Lyon. The residents it welcomes include single mothers, people living alone, and families. Personal situations are diverse, but they come together around the same need: having a roof over their heads, something the metropolis and public authorities apparently cannot provide. In Lyon, the number of people sleeping rough is estimated at around 3,000 people, including 310 children and 700 unaccompanied minors. What is happening at Maria is an opportunity, but also the result of everyone’s perseverance, hope held high, and solidarity as a weapon!
We are launching this fundraiser to cover the residents’ primary needs:
- purchase non-perishable food in large quantities and hygiene products,
- pay health expenses for those who cannot access social security,
- acquire toys and educational materials for the children.
To ensure good living conditions for Maria’s residents, we must also continue the renovation work that has been started to guarantee the apartments’ sanitary conditions. However, we lack the funds to buy the necessary materials and tools. Once this is taken care of, the residents also wish to organize cultural events.
