🌞 Support Matahari Smile House: join the 2026 adventure!
The context
Adonara is a remote island in Indonesia facing deep social challenges: low literacy rates, almost no English education, few structured activities for young people after school, and limited access to cultural and educational resources. Children lack structure, opportunity, and a vision for their future.
What we do
The Matahari Association runs the Matahari Smile House project at the Pustaka Bambu socio-educational centre: a project built by and for the local community, in close partnership with the people of Adonara.
→ Daily English classes for ages 7–12, evening classes for ages 13–20
→ Creative, cultural, ecological and sports workshops
→ Pedagogical garden: farming, ecology, and income generation to fund educational materials
→ Hosting international volunteers to foster cultural exchange
→ Building & renovating the centre: new classroom, library, volunteer housing...
→ Educational outreach to neighbouring remote villages
Social impact — key figures:
50+ children & young people supported every day
40+ families engaged in the project
12+ international volunteers hosted in one year
100+ educational activities organised
1 local teacher recruited to structure the centre's activities
15+ village workers employed
Students in our classes rank among the top in their school. The centre is recognised and supported by local authorities. The project directly contributes to the village economy and actively promotes gender equality.
Why support us now?
After one year on the ground, the foundations are solid, but the best is yet to come. One more year will allow us to train local leaders, expand to neighbouring villages, and make the centre fully self-sustaining.
Your donations fund: the on-the-ground coordination role, the local teacher's salary, educational materials, and the completion of our infrastructure.
💛 By supporting Matahari, you invest in a community-rooted, transparent project with lasting impact.
