Action "A small biscuit for a big impact":

In South Kivu, one of the major challenges is the fight against chronic malnutrition, affecting one in two children. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are also affected.**

Faced with this alarming problem, the association https://keshocongo.org, under the leadership of Dr. Adolphe Nyakasane, has been committed since 2015 to fighting malnutrition by using local resources to produce protein- and energy-rich biscuits. These products are intended for children, pregnant women and breastfeeding women, and are distributed through maternity wards, health centers and schools. With a direct impact on approximately 40,000 children, 7,000 pregnant women and 5,000 breastfeeding women each year, their work provides a vital response to infant mortality and the devastating consequences of malnutrition for many families in Kivu.

Here is an overview of the main points of this project:

· Fighting malnutrition on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idjwi: By providing protein- and energy-rich biscuits, the initiative aims to improve the nutrition of children, pregnant women and breastfeeding women.

· Expanding the impact: Through collaboration with Afia Shuleni, the ambition is to reach a greater number of malnourished children in schools.

Concrete actions:

1. Local production: The biscuits are made from local resources, thereby supporting the region's economy while meeting nutritional needs.

2. Training and capacity building: Women’s solidarity groups in Idjwi will be trained to promote women's economic empowerment.

3. Equipment purchases: Acquiring an industrial biscuit oven is essential to ensure production in sufficient quantities.

Expected impact:

· Improved health: By providing nutritious food, the project hopes to reduce infant mortality and improve the overall health of vulnerable populations in Idjwi.

· Support for the local economy: By training women and stimulating the local economy, the project aims to create jobs and promote sustainable development.

https://www.afiashuleni.com plays an active role within schools and aims to broaden the scope of assistance by caring for even more malnourished children and vulnerable women.

http://www.mothersandmidwives.org (Mothers and Midwives Support) supports several women’s associations and solidarity midwives in Idjwi in South-East Kivu, helping them to strengthen the local economy.

Together, the efforts of KeshoCongo, Afia Shuleni and MMS form a powerful wave of energy and collaboration and build a bridge between nutritional health and economic development, thereby fostering a lasting impact for the local community.
