Dear friends, family, colleagues,
We have wonderful news to share with you this Tuesday, October 8. Our friend and journalist Husna has finally obtained a visa for France.
Why is this wonderful news? Because Husna is a young Afghan journalist who had to flee Taliban-run Afghanistan in early 2023. A few months earlier, she had been arrested and beaten by the Taliban police simply for being a woman working as a journalist. Fleeing was her only option to remain free and, above all, alive.
Unable to move around the country alone (because Taliban laws require women to always be accompanied by a mahram, a male family member), Husna fled with her brother.
After a long journey by road, they both arrived in Islamabad, Pakistan, one year ago. They immediately filed several asylum and visa applications, including to France. After six months, their Pakistani visas expired, putting them at daily risk of expulsion back to Afghanistan and therefore imprisonment. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) supported them and so did we — Marine, Mortaza and Célia — as best we could.
But today we need your help. Husna and her brother have finally received a visa for France, but they cannot afford their plane ticket, which costs 1140 euros. Moreover, if we can raise more, it would help them survive in France before they can receive their first benefits (one and a half months after their arrival). We therefore appeal to your generosity to help us pay for this ticket. So that they can finally be free and safe.
Please know that every contribution, no matter the amount, will make an enormous difference. Helping Husna put an end to this nightmare is not only supporting an extremely courageous woman, but it is also a powerful act for press freedom.
