Décédée_Décidée is, first and foremost, an intimate documentary film about the chosen end of life of a 70-year-old woman with cancer.
This woman was my mother.
I accompanied her for the last 2 months of her life and, with her agreement, I filmed her last 6 days.
Between us, speech is free, and the tone of the documentary is as well.
Joy is omnipresent. A choice, once again.
Laughter became the commas in our sentences. Without them, no breathing.
This does not, of course, prevent sadness from showing itself, from mingling with all the other feelings, so many and varied. And when it demands to be expressed, we then live it fully, in the same way as each of the events that punctuate our final moments together.
Seriousness as well as small breakdowns impose themselves on us as a necessity, one leaning on the other in a kind of salvational dance.
The viewer has the impression of being inside the documentary; they find themselves at our side, in my mother’s room, laughing, crying, or questioning with us.
This film obviously speaks of death and life but also of each person’s place in the family, of love, of clumsiness, of the activism of a woman determined to choose, and ultimately of the fear of those who remain.
In parallel, Décédée_Décidée is also a documentary-performance project.
Indeed, while I was sorting the footage for the film, I wrote and composed some songs directly and indirectly related to what I saw and what moved me.
I now wish to record them and create a performance in which they will either breathe space into or bring another perspective to the documentary projected behind me on stage.
I had 13 hours of raw footage.
I made a preliminary edit of 59 mins using consumer-grade software that does not allow for professional development.
The equipment currently at my disposal does not meet the quality requirements, and it has also become necessary for me to train in video editing.
Your moral support is very precious but unfortunately not enough.
Your financial help will allow me to carry this project through to completion.
