For 15 years, the international association SoMed Solidarité Optique Médicale, based in Villefranche-sur-Saône, has been conducting vision screening campaigns in France and abroad and providing eyeglasses adapted to populations who do not have access to ophthalmological care.
In France, SoMed equips users of the Permanences d'Accès aux Soins de Santé (hospital social services present in all facilities across the territory), in collaboration with the Regional Health Agency.
Abroad, SoMed leads the setup of eyeglass manufacturing workshops by providing vocational training in Benin, Burundi, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Morocco, and the migrant camp in Samos, Greece.
Each mission is organized under the supervision of local authorities and relies on a local NGO.
Each mission is very concrete and operational:
- 300 eye exams performed over 5 days
- In 75% of cases, a visual impairment is detected, and an appropriate pair of glasses is then provided free of charge
- In 5% of cases, a referral is made for an ophthalmological emergency to a local hospital facility
