Out of a prison population of 17,000 prisoners in Senegal, 5% are women and minors. Half of the incarcerated are presumed innocent, awaiting trial for an average duration of 18 months.
Through the tour in Senegalese prisons we will try to provide assistance to 550 women and minors currently incarcerated.
Anoucka Desseilles, painter and teacher, accompanies the concerts and runs workshops with the detainees:
"Since 2005, my work as a visual artist is nourished by my regular trips to Senegal and my work is essentially focused on portrait and human representation. In 2011 my travel notebooks were presented at the Musée de la Poste during the exhibition “Carnets de voyage, le monde au bout du crayon”, as well as at the Clermont-Ferrand festival, “Il faut aller voir”. My work has been shown by several Parisian galleries as well as at the AKAA fair and during the Dakar Off Biennale (BAAT in Yene). I am today a permanent artist of the Frédéric Roulette Gallery in Paris and exhibit regularly in the provinces. In 2022 following my last trip to the Petite Côte of Dakar and my encounter with the fishermen of Yene and Toubab Dialow, I represented the daily life of this sea population. Having long experience working in the childhood and EHPAD sectors, close to people’s reality, my involvement in the project “Levez la Pénitence” goes without saying and fits naturally into my practice as a visual artist. I propose to accompany Agsila in her prison visits and to offer detained people who wish it their portrait and to give it to them, which would contribute to a redefinition of self-esteem and to go beyond the purely punitive dimension of their incarceration."

Agsila, Senegalese composer, has been singing for detainees since 2017:
"For me love is the only score we have a duty to play in music. I have always been drawn to people whose conscience is in pain. In 2010, I did an internship to validate my year of study in Thiès and I had the opportunity to accompany a great enthusiast of prison visits. I met detained minors and one of them particularly made me want to return to listen. Torn between lucidity and compassion, I eventually felt the need to sing to bring a sigh of relief. If only for one day. I therefore took part in several tours, with the very affectionate Tata Ndéye, and accompanied by the young Saint Louis group Anto and his musicians. The prison administration welcomes us very well but resources are lacking. We decided to launch a fundraiser so we can bring our help to all minors and all women incarcerated for this Christmas 2022."
